PMR

IntelliPower - A fine-tuned balance of spin speed, transfer rate and caching algorithms designed to deliver both significant power savings and solid performance.

IntelliSeek - Calculates optimum seek speeds to lower power consumption, noise, and vibration.

NoTouch ramp load technology - The recording head never touches the disk media ensuring significantly less wear to the recording head and media as well as better drive protection in transit.

Perpendicular Magnetic Recording (PMR) - Employs PMR technology to achieve even greater areal density.

StableTrac™ - The motor shaft is secured at both ends to reduce system-induced vibration and stabilize platters for accurate tracking, during read and write operations. (2 TB models only)

Low power spin-up - WD Caviar Green drives consume less current during startup allowing lower peak loads.

Advanced power technology - Electronic components deliver best-in-class low power consumption for reduced power requirements and increased reliability.

big and fast as well

Reviewer: Jack M. Hoffman,
Bought this for an 8 core Mac Pro, primarily for temporary storage and backup of video that had come off of P2 cards.
I was surprised at the performance of this drive, since it's a green drive, but the benchmark numbers I got back in AJA System test were nearly the same as my other 32mb Caviar Black 1tb drives!
It was something like 97MB/s read and 95MB/s write for this new 2TB monster, compared to the 100MB/s read and write for the high performance caviar blacks I have.
I'm entrusting my 2TB collection to this drive

I'll be honest and say that I spent 30 hours considering the pros and cons of getting this 2TB WD Green drive versus a Seagate 1.5TB (with reports of firmware failures) or paying way more for a 2TB WD RE4 Enterprise class, which is unavailable at Amazon as far as I know.

So far the facts: Compared to my 4 other 500GB WD Caviar Black drives, its temperature, even after copying 1.5TB of data to it is 10-15 degrees cooler than the other drives in idle state. Despite having a variable speed - that is not quite 5400rpm and not quite 7200rpm, I have enjoyed 85.91MB/s write rates and 88.55MB/s reads. This was a OSX/Finder test to and from a RAM Disk with 2000MB/s capacity.

Also great to know: This drive is very quiet and I am glad that it will not add noise when I am recording vocals or quiet instruments in compositions.

I am entrusting my data to this drive for the next few years, so even though there are cheaper 1.5TB solutions out there, there have been reports of failing drives in comparison to this. Also, I saved $45 buying from Amazon, including 1 day shipping, in comparison to Fry's Electronics.

Note: Capacity when formatted with Mac OSX HFS+ Extended (Journaled) is 1.8TB. This is to be expected from the disparity of how all hard disk manufacturers promote their drives and how operating systems actually address them.
Great with my DroboShare

For you Drobo fans this drive will not fail you. I waited until I could purchase four (4) of them collectively and plugged them into my #1 Drobo off my DroboShare. Quiet and cool, these drives came to life immediately and Drobo formatted them quickly. It should be noted, for us Drobo addicts, which out of 8TB you have 2.23GB reserved for overhead, 1.83TB for protection and 5.44TB available for data on a single volume. I have been migrating my external storage data without issues and am working on getting my 2nd Drobo populated.
Huge, Quiet & Fast

This is a very fine disk drive from the highest quality drive maker. I bought 2 to hold my ever-growing load of photos and videos which had filled up a pair of 500 GB drives. The WD20EADS has huge capacity, it's quiet, it runs cool (so it should last longer) and most surprising, it's faster than my 500 GB drive. With the new drive, the time it takes to convert RAW photos to JPG format dropped by 12%. This is probably due to the large 32MB cache.

Some things to watch out for:

The great price on Amazon is partly because the drive is in OEM packaging, which means all you get is the drive - no cables, no instructions, no installation CD. Many vendors sell drives this way, this isn't anything unusual. If you have installed OEM drives before, then you know the routine and it's not a problem. If you need the instructions or installation software, you can download it from the Western Digital support site.

If you are wanting to install this drive in an older motherboard - beware! It didn't work in my Gigabyte GA-7NNXP running F15 BIOS (latest) and Silicon Image firmware 4.2.00 (which is only 84 revs out of date and not upgradable). The BIOS hung during initialization of the Silicon Image SATA controller and there doesn't seem to be any workaround or update possible. On the other hand, it worked fine in my wife's Elite Group KT-600A motherboard, which is slightly older and less sophisticated than the Gigabyte board. The Gigabyte board was running 500 GB drives on the SATA ports without a problem, and there are no general size limitations between 500 GB and 2 TB. It appears that the BIOS is just buggy. The Western Digital support site has a list of tested compatible SATA controllers, so if your board is on that list you should be good to go. If your board isn't on the list, you might want to search the net for information on your particular board before you buy.
A ton of storage and pretty fast too!

Nice drive. I needed it for simple, long-term bulk storage, but it's surprisingly fast and very, very quiet!
