Antivirus 2010 is the next generation of a three year run of the “Antivirus 20XX” series. Just like Antivirus 2010’s predecessors (Antivirus 2008 and Antivirus 2009 among other variants) it is spread through online advertisements and sometimes installed in a bundle with other programs without your knowledge or consent.

Antivirus 2010 sometimes will load a fake “Blue Screen of Death” with the following message:

A spyware application has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer

If this is the first time you’ve seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
Click to make sure your antivirus software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your software manufacturer for any antivirus updates you might need.
Windows detected unregistered version of Antivirus 2010 protection on your computer. If problem continue, please activate your antivirus software to prevent computer damage and data loss.

Under no circumstances should you activate or purchase Antivirus 2010. It will intimidate you with errors and fake virus and spyware scans to try to get you to buy their software that actually caused the problems with your computer in the first place. The people behind Antivirus 2010 and all the previous variants are very clever and will make regular internet pop-ups look like legitimate Windows errors and warnings to trick you into clicking on them.

The best defense against this and similar spyware and virus programs is to know what protection you have installed. If those specific programs are not the ones warning you of an infection you should avoid clicking on the warning boxes and simply close them. Always be careful of what you click on the internet and be aware of these types of scams.
